Donald Young stuns Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in second round – PTT Thailand Open 2011
Another seeded contestant crashed out of the PTT Thailand Open, as the fourth seeded Spaniard, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez suffered a defeat in the second round at the hands of the world number 55, Donald Young of the United States
on Thursday.
The contest was staged on the indoor hard courts of the Impact Arena, in Bangkok, Thailand, with the 35ranked Spaniard falling in the three-set thriller, 1-6, 7-6(0), 5-7, to let Young into the quarter-final draw of the APT (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
The battle for supremacy between the two contestants lasted for two hours and thirty nine minutes, before the 22-year-old American wrapped up victory in three sets to surprise everyone. Garcia-Lopez was off to a sluggish start
in the opener, dropping the set without any serious resistance, but made his way back in the game to give some tough time to Young in the later parts. The Spaniard took the second set tie breaker to level the contest at one-all but committed some crucial mistakes
in the last moments of the final set to let the American away with a convincing victory.
“I feel good to have got a win like that,” said Young after disposing of the fourth seeded Spaniard. “I held my nerve, because I missed chances to break in the second set.”
Garcia-Lopez fired nine cracking aces in the contest and reeled off 37 out of 64 first serve points, with his opponent clinching 42 out of 63 points to get the better of him. Young converted five of his 12 break opportunities in
the contest and defended four out of six break points he faced from the fourth seeded Garcia-Lopez.
The Spaniard fell on the back foot right from the beginning, as Young nailed three crushing serve breaks to pocket the opening set. He finally got some rhythm in the second set tie breaker round to come back on even terms with
the American but slumped in the final set once again to lose the matchup. Young wrapped up his 16th victory of the current year to move into the final eight of the tournament in a convincing fashion.
Young will take on the Japanese qualifier, Go Soeda, in the next encounter to fight for a place in the semi-final stage of the Thailand Open. Soeda got to the round of eight after defeating the unseeded German, Tobias Kamke, in
straight sets 6-2, 7-6(7), in the second round of the tournament to meet Young.
