Donald Young upsets Juan Ignacio Chela in third round clash – US Open 2011
Rated at number 84 in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings, Donald Young of the United States produced a surprise result in the third round of the US open when he outplayed the 24th seed Argentine,
Juan Ignacio Chela, to reach the round of 16 for the first time in his career on Sunday afternoon.
The contest took place at the Grandstand of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, with the unseeded local contestant wining in straight sets 7-5, 6-4,
6-3, to stun everyone. The match lasted for two hours and fifteen minutes before the 24th ranked Chela succumbed to the belligerent American in the third set.
It was a brilliant display of high quality tennis from Young to outplay a top-30 tennis player in straight sets and he moved into the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in his career. The American served extremely well
when needed the most and keep winning points on regularity to come out as the winner in the end.
Young suffered a defeat at the hands of Chela last year at New Haven Open at Yale, falling in the third set 7-5, 4-6, 0-6, but played far aggressive in the Sunday’s contest to level his head-to-head series with the Argentine at
1-1. The 22-year-old American came under lime light on Friday when provided an absolute shocker to defeat the world number 14, Stanislas Wawrinka, in the second round of the Grand Slam tournament.
The unseeded Young was off to an excellent start in the opening set, breaking Chela’s serve early to take the upper hand in the game. He was serving for the first set at 5-4 when the 24th seed Argentine registered his
first serve break of the day to come back in the contest but Young kept his focus in the game to take the first set at 7-5.
“You know, I was a little disappointed I didn't serve out the first set. I thought I was giving a chance away and maybe he would take advantage,” Young said. “You know, I had to come back in the last match with Wawrinka, I came
back a couple times, so was pretty confident I could do it again.”
Young had lesser trouble in wrapping up victory by cruising through the later two sets with the utmost ease to book a date with the world number four, Andy Murray of Great Britain, in the round of 16 for a spot in the quarter-finals
of the last Grand Slam of the current year.
