I just heard about the earthquake that happened in China days ago that killed an estimated 50, 000 people. I was wondering how I can donate ( not money wise, more like clothes and food wise) to China. Is there any way i can help living in USA. I feel hopeless and terrible for the people that have lost their loved ones, I feel too privileged as an Chinese American living here with everything i need and wants to give back to the country of my roots. I am truly thankful for all my family and friends that i have, please take a moment out of your day to pray for the safety of many people that still haven't been found yet. Thank you very much!!!!

  1. It's very nice of you caring about the people on the other side of the earth. There are many ways to donate, Red Cross is a nice one. Of course, there are many other organizations trying to collect donations and send them to China. One thing you may take consideration is that all the charities are not equal. Some may take too much overhead away from the fund. The worst in record once took more than 80% as their management fees and only send about 10% to the beneficiaries. Meanwhile, some pure volunteer based organizations send 100% of your donation to the target.

Also, some charities may divert the donation to other purposes when the amount exceed certain threshold. Make sure that your donation is used as you designated.

Another thing you can do is to educate your friends, let them aware of this tragedy. If they can donate too, you essentially multiplied your help. Further, check whether your employer can match your donation. So you can maximize your power.

For this particular tragedy, I found th call for donations and a list of possible venues at www.2008earthquake.org.

  2. It is good that you remember someone that was unlucky on these days.  Talking about contributing, you should see whether your contribution can reach China in a short period of time or not.  Second - are your contribution vital to the people or it may cheaper to purchase those items in China itself.  Third - to whom your contrbution will be send.  Are they the end user or middlemen?  Think about it carefully.

  3. Have a garage sale for the clothes you want to get rid of, and donate the proceeds to the Red Cross or other charity of your choice. It will benefit the people in China much more than you trying to send things to them before they even have roads rebuilt for delivery of these items.

  4. You can always donate to Tzi-Chi or Red Cross. I'm quite sure both are fundraising to help out the earthquake disaster in China.

You can go to their website and donate online =)

    Thank you for caring!!
