Donating books to charities?

What is benefit of donating books to charities?

Charities, in general, resell them and use the money for their programs.  Some of the books are recyclable and they get money for that too.  I donate romance novels to them.  For paperbacks in good condition like sci fi, mystery, action adventure (books a 20 or 30something guy would read) I either send them to the troops in Iraq/Afghanistan or more recently, donated to our county jail's lending library for inmates.  

Childrens books, cookbooks and craft books are best sold at garage sales and/or used book stores. Children's books can also be donated to both elementary schools and day cares.
