Question:

Donating furniture?

I'm so disillusioned. I live on Long Island and I can't GIVE my furniture away... I don't want to give to the salvation army where they SELL it to the poor people that can hardly afford it. I don't want to put it on craigs list, listing as "free".. Red Cross wants money for donations.. I want to GIVE my dresser and table to a REAL person who really needs it. Unwed mothers, someone just coming out of a homeless shelter starting anew....After contacting many volunteer organizations - they can't use it; it's too big; they don't need it... all I want to do is GIVE my furniture to someone who really really needs it and can't afford anything. The red tape in this country is disgusting. This is so sad.

  1. Check out Freecycle.   You "recycle" your things by giving them, free, to people who need them. It's a great way to give your things new, good homes where they are actually needed.

    www.freecycle.org.

My friends and I've given away and have gotten great things this way.

  2. Keep in mind that the stores that charities run provide jobs and help to fund their programs, many of which benefit the very people you wish to help.  When I had a computer desk I wanted to donate I found that the local Savers Thrift Store which supports local charities was happy to take it. I don't know if it's near you, but I checked their web site, and there is one in West Hempstead, NY:

    188 Hempstead Turnpike,

    W. Hempstead, NY 11552

    Phone: (516) 489-1661

Another option is to find out if you know of any charity organization which will be having a garage sale. I held one when I was raising funds for a charity walk I was doing. Friends donated an amazing amount of great items! It allowed some people to support me who may not have been able to comfortably provide a monetary donation.

A third option, which has already been mentioned is to see if there is a Yahoo Freecycle list for your area. Simply search for this on Yahoo groups.

  3. We have a business that is a non-profit and the law is just about to break you before you open the doors.

We suggest you contact, your local Disable Vet'  or Masonic Lodge where you live.  They will find people that need it with in your own city.

God Bless you for your big heartiness too.

  4. Salvation Army sells things that are donated.

But, they do sell for cheap and that gives people

who can't afford new furniture to get something

nicer.  Salvation gets money to further their causes.

You could put an ad in the paper and give it to

whomever you might decide is the most needy.

Also the local Elks lodge or other Fraternal

    Organization might help you there.

  5. get over it.

  6. well ur  desire to give something is laudable.Don't be disheartened, time will come when u will find the real accepter. There r a lot of people who r devoid or made to devoid the needs.Persons like u r extremely rare.Well thought.I m with u in this campaign.Be friends. Will u.

  7. http://www.freecycle.org/

great site to give and or get free stuff...

  8. Try donating it to a Church that give things to people that need help.

  9. Go down to the local women's shelter and see if they have a program for the women who are starting fresh.

  10. I have often given to those in need. You need to know who is is need. There are other things involved. I have a piano I play, I have to move, piano has to go. Even if I give it away, it will cost a couple hundred dollars to move and re-tune for a year. Music education is very important. So, there will be a cost to someone if I just give it away to a student who could benefit in having it. You sound exactly how I feel about the issue, and I don't really have an answer.

  11. put  sign out side  on tree  free fruniture  garbege pickers will get it  or  put sign on stores bullitin bords  free fruniture

  12. Check with a local church. Surely they know of families in need. Your local shelter could probably use it too.

  13. Why dont you just hang where the poor people do? Your bound to find someone deserving of your furniture and you wont have to go through all of these organisations.

  14. When you say you contacted volunteer organizations, does that mean you actually called on homeless shelters?  The reason I ask is that we have shelters here with programs to help people in shelters get back on their own providing clothes & such for a job and furniture  etc for apartments.  I believe that everything goes thru the shelters & not thru organizations.  Most people only think of Karma (3 Fold Law or reap what you so etc) only applies to actions, but it's also for thoughts & words.  Even if you end up just donating to the Salvation Army, your thoughts & your heart are in the right place.  Good luck to you!!

  15. If the weather is good, put it on the side of the road, or if your neighborhood is not ghetto enough, come to mine and leave it on the side of my road.

  16. Yup sucks don't it?  Call your local shelters and such, see if there is someone in need of those kiind of goods.

  17. Have you heard about freecycle?

It's the best thing... it's new and it might be close to you, actually.

Anyway, it's one of those yahoo groups, you search for freecycle in your area and get connected with people that have a real need! I gave my furniture away that way! And I felt like I was making someone happy.

    I believe it's groups.yahoo.com/freecycle

  18. Put a free denature ad on your church bulletin or your club.
