Donating old clothes?

In the city, there are lots of things that look like the post office mail boxes that you just put clothes in if you want to donate. Does anyone know if the clothes actually go to people?

  1. There is a group that is in charge of them, I think- or atleast, I hope- that they are distributed to shelters and goodwills.

I have also, however, heard of people sleeping in the boxes, so I guess your clothes are doing good either way. Sorry I couldn't be more specific.

  2. I would hope so... that's what they're for!

  3. if you don't think they do, pass um out yourself a little at a time to homeless people you see around= or sell them at a garage sale and donate the money to the Salvation Army= or Red Cross= they need it and help for sure==

  4. Sometimes, like good will, they are not given to people but are sold. The money is supposed to find it's way to help people but it depends on the charity you are giving to.

There should be a name on the box, call and ask what happens to it, and where it goes.

I used to donate clothes and other household items directly to a battered women/homeless shelter. That way I knew where it was going.

  5. Often they do not.  They are likely to be sold for rag and the charity listed given a portion of the proceeds, a small portion.   That makes that an OK place to donate if you have clean rag but not a good place to donate good usable clothing.

  6. yeah they do but only if people actually come and take the stuff because they really need it

    but...

if u dont want anyone to touch it then go to the actual store and give it to them, in that way its more thoughtfull and the next time they see you around theyll say good things to u
