Hi everyone. Im wondering if anyone can help me on this. i have looked online & cant find what im looking for.. im a victim of Domestic violence & a survivor, But there are many people out there still needing help. I have tons of clothing, books, ect & I would like these things to Go to a shelter Or organization for those whom suffer from domestic violence, those that cant go Home & get clothes, or whatever, i know i can donate to a salvation army or whatnot, but these poor people still have to buy what i donate.. not fair.. they have suffered enough. so i live in eastern idaho ( mountain time). & was wondering how i might be able to find a place where my donations will Do the most good. if i wanted these things "sold' i would just have a yard sale.. i want to help those in Need... yes For free. i know what its like to be in a coma the day after you bury a son because you have fallen victim to a stalker & an abusive spouse.. it happened to me. I just want to help others.

  1. Please go to http://www.ndvh.org  the national domestic violence hotline site.  They can put you in touch with the family violence (what a strange term, isn't that) organizations nearest you.    Thank you for wanting to reach out and help others who are hurting lijke you were.

  2. Domestic violence shelters often don't have large storage spaces for clothes donations, etc., nor the staff to clean, store and distribute large amounts of clothes. You should contact your nearest domestic violence shelter and find out what their biggest needs are -- it's often not clothes.

As for your clothing donations, please understand that the Salvation Army and Goodwill have to clean the clothes, pay for a facility to store the clothes, and pay staff -- and the staff are often people who re-entering the workforce, and can be victims of domestic violence themselves. The clothing is sold, but this pays for all of the aforementioned costs, as well as services for people who are the victims of domestic violence, homeless people, people re-entering the workforce, etc. It's a model that works for everyone. If you have worked in the donation business, you probably know that people often value what they pay for more than what is donated -- which is another reason to charge a nominal fee for the clothes.

You say you "just want to help others." Why not volunteer as well? You could call your local domestic violence shelter, your local GoodWill, your local Salvation Army, or a community of faith (church, temple or mosque) and find out how they help in the community and how you could join in as a volunteer. Also visit http://www.volunteermatch.org

  3. I don't know but I am really glad you want to help.

Maybe you should just pop into a shelter near you and offer. Just because they don't have a donation scheme set up doesn't mean they won't be grateful of your things.

Maybe if you have the time you could even volunteer, it sounds like you would be up to it.

Good luck whatever you do, I hope you can find a way to help.

  4. Try looking for the Catholic Charities Chapter nearest to you.

All shelters for domestic violence are well hidden for obvious reasons.  Our Chapter even runs a store for second hand goods.  What the clients can't use is sold.  Clothing is not accepted.
