Done with deal matter: WR Josh Gordon aims to make up for lost time at training camp – NFL News
The only pick of the supplement National Football League (NFL) draft, Josh Gordon, has won a four-year contract from the Cleveland Browns, which will help him earn the league’s base salary.
Both sides agreed to the fresh terms on Monday, the team confirmed in an official release. The rookie wide receiver’s total payout over the period of four years amounts to $5.3 million. This includes $3.8 million in guarantees.
Josh will earn the NFL’s minimum salary of $390,000 a year while getting another $2.325 million for the first-year cap limit of $971,209 in the signing bonus.
Browns selected Josh in the second round of the draft on an agreement to surrender their second pick of the 2013 draft. As many as eight players from respective universities qualified for the draft but Josh happened to be the only one selected.
With signing of the deal, which is mandatory for prospective pro players before training camp, Josh is set join the squad at the camp, which opens in the last week of this month.
It is yet to be seen how quickly the player immerses into the pro conditions and makes up for the lost time in training and workout. He has already missed the entire offseason programme and has the training camp and preseason time to catch up on the left
out work.
Browns are upbeat about their latest signing, expecting the WR to prove to be a great future asset for them. His form is important for the team given they faced severe criticism over lacking strength at the position.
The criticism had come even though their quarterbacks did not perform impressively either. The incumbent QB Colt McCoy remained under pressure over his poor show on the starting line.
It was due to this reason that they had looked at serving their QB position need in the main draft, taking QB Brandon Weeden, most probably the new starter of the team.
Now they have attempted to strengthen their WR position, hoping Gordon will come up to their expectations. If Weeden is given the starting role, Gordon will be at the receiving end of his throws, and Browns must hope the new pairing works out for them.
