Donna Vekic dismisses Oksana Kalashnikova in round two – Royal Indian Open 2012
World number 118, Donna Vekic, disposed the 22-year-old Georgian professional, Oksana Kalashnikova, in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 to book a place in the quarter-final of the Royal Indian Open on Wednesday. She rounded off the encounter in quick succession taking just a fraction over an hour and 52 minutes.
Considering the recent form of the 16-year-old Croatian, it wasn’t a difficult draw at all. She is the third seeded contestant in the tournament and battling a player who is ranked beyond world number 500 was never a test for her. She did everything right; parcelled a barrage of winners to her rival during the contest and never looked in any sort of trouble with her serves.
Vekic took a bit of time to warm up and almost lost a breakpoint in the process but did well to recover quickly and denied her opponent from an early lead. After a tight start, both players capitalized on their serves and pushed the scoreboard to 3-2 in favour of Vekic without any damage.
Kalashnikova looked to continue the momentum but was stopped in her tracks by the in-form teenager who clasped a breakthrough in the sixth game courtesy to a fantastic winner down the line. It was the opening that was required to swirl the contest in favour of the Croatian.
The third seed Vekic protected the breakthrough with a serve hold but not before she saved a couple of breakpoints. In the following game, the Georgian player lost another breakthrough and that proved to be the final action from the opening set.
A little lapse of concentration from Vekic forced him to lose the second set 4-6 but she recovered emphatically well to register a thumping bagel that rounded off the second round contest at a high-note. She wasn’t in any trouble at all in the second set but a little over-confidence cost her the whole phase of the match. However, the reply from Vekic in the final wiped off all grieves.
Vekic is scheduled to lock horns against the winner of the contest between the eighth seed Thai, Tamarine Tanasugarn, and the Turk professional, Cagla Buyukakcay.
