Donnie Nelson: Dallas Mavericks in position to sign Deron Williams – NBA Update
Dallas Mavericks General Manager Donnie Nelson has said that his team are in position to acquire the services of Brooklyn Nets super star Deron Williams. Nelson though said he could not say as to whether the point guard would actually join Dallas, as the
final decision rests with the players.
The Mavericks have long been interested in Deron Williams, a Dallas native and an All-Star point guard that the team feels would give them impetus to launch another crack at the NBA World Championship. The Mavericks have worked over the last year or so to
free up considerable cap space, space that they intend to use in order to prove Deron with the best possible contract.
Dallas GM Donnie Nelson has admitted, right before free agency begins, that his team are now equipped with the means to sign a super star of Williams calibre, but he could not say what the final outcome of their endeavour would be.
"We're in position (to sign Williams), that's all you can ask," general manager Donnie Nelson said. "So we're hopeful and we've just got to play it out.”
The Mavericks won the NBA World Championship in 2010-2011 season when super star German Dirk Nowitzki won the NBA Finals MVP after an inspired post season. The Mavs then moved key pieces of that team resulting in a lacklustre showing last year.
Nelson though believes Dirk deserves another go at the championship and the team will be looking to recruit the best players available in order to help him do that.
"Our priority ... is to get the most high-impact player that we can."
The Mavericks have quite a few players of their own heading into the free agency, including star guard Jason Terry, but Dallas are not yet turning their focus to them.
"As awkward as it is, I cannot talk about my own free agents," Nelson said. "That's a slap-down million dollar fine (by the NBA) of which I will not pay. I don't think (owner) Mark (Cuban) will pay that."
Whether Deron decides to join Dallas or not, the team’s head coach Rick Carlisle appeared confident that they would be able to attract players of a sufficient calibre.
"We've got a great owner, it's a great city, the physical setup is second to none in terms of the proximity of everything, and this is a franchise that's always going to be in the hunt."
