Donnie Nelson says Dallas Mavericks have no regrets over the Deron Williams fiasco – NBA Update
This year’s free agency could not have proved to be more worse for the Dallas Mavericks, who after losing their yearlong pursuit of Deron Williams to Brooklyn Nets - a player they completely dismantled their championship winning team for - are now looking at two of their most important players in Jason Terry and Jason Kidd heading to other teams as free agents.
The plan saw the Mavs get rid of several key figures including Tyson Chandler and Jose Barea from the team which won a championship two seasons ago, and the move has now come back to backfire on owner Mark Cuban and president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson.
However despite the setback which has put the Mavs on a long rebuilding path, Nelson believes that facing setbacks in the path of progress is just a thing they have to deal with.
"We were in a position to get a superstar, which is how you win championships in this league, so there are no regrets, none whatsoever. We would have done everything the same way. We didn't punch it in the end zone. You can sit there and feel sorry for yourself or pick yourself up by the boot straps and jump back in the saddle." – Nelson
At the moment, Dallas only has seven players under contract and have not been linked to brining in any new recruits to fill up the roster. According to Nelson, the plan for Dallas is still to lure in a star player to play alongside Dirk Nowitzki, and at the moment they would only be brining in new people on short term contracts.
With this plan, the Mavericks would still be looking at a lot of cap space by the end of next season with their possible targets being, Chris Paul and Dwight Howard, both of whom will be free agents come next summer.
As the current situation stands, the Mavericks are looking at a much depleted lineup even compared to last season during which they were hardly able to make it to the first round of playoffs.
However Nelson believes that with a little luck, they would be able continue their streak of 12 consecutive appearances in the post season.
