Donnie Nietes unanimously defeats Felipe Salguero to defend WBO light flyweight title – Boxing News
Donnie Nietes, the WBO light flyweight champion, displayed an impressive showdown to defend his newly acquired title against Mexican surging lad, Felipe Salguero, the current World Boxing Federation light flyweight champion, in a 12-round bout held on June
2, 2012.
The above duo headlined the ‘Pinoy Pride XIV – Night of Champions’ pay-per-view, which was organised and promoted by Michael Aldeguer of ALA Promotions. The showdown was co-headlined by the 12-round clash between Genesis Servania and Genaro Garcia for the
ownership of the vacant WBC International Silver super bantamweight title.
The show was televised live on ABS-CBN channel and the ring was set up at Resorts World Hotel in Newport Performing Arts Theatre, Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines.
The bout classic, and it surely excited the fans present at the arena. Donnie, 30, was entering in his career’s 34th bout, boasting 29 wins.
The Filipino proud has nailed 16 of his opponents by knockout and has lost just one bout in his illustrious career. Also known as ‘The Ahas’, Donnie had the odds clearly in his favour and seemed to have the upper hand over his Saturday night opponent Felipe.
Moreover, Donnie has held the WBO and WBO Asia Pacific minimumweight titles as well. He grabbed his WBO light flyweight title from Ramon Garcia Hirales by collecting a unanimous decision.
Felipe was entering in his 20th career bout, exhibiting16 wins. The Mexican proud has nailed 11 of his opponents by knockout and was coming from a long win streak since his career’s only two losses.
As it was expected, Donnie not only set the pace of the bout but also dominated it. Felipe hardly connected any jabs that stunned the champion. Fans were surprised to see a resilient Felipe, taking the worst beating of his life yet not giving up. Even Donnie
seemed amused to experience such resilience from the challenger.
Despite having a hard iron-jab, Donnie was unable to knock the Mexican out and things went to the judges, who emphatically announced Nietes as the winner and still the owner of the WBO gold.
After the bout, Donnie, while sharing his thoughts, admitted that Felipe was a tough challenger. The Filipino orthodox stated, “I believe that I was able to justify my win this time. Salguero was really a tough fighter but I’m quite satisfied with my performance.”
With this win, Donnie now stands with 30 victories in his resume and Felipe has unfortunately collected his third career and first loss in almost three years.
