Donovan Solano has good chance for making it to opening day roster for Miami Marlins - MLB
As regular season approaches, players who were earlier in line-up are on verge of being ousted and others who were out of chances altogether are getting nods. Non roster invitee Solano had minimal chances in relation to veteran Donnie Murphy for bench spot
in Miami Marlins. His splendid performance in Spring Training however has put Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen into an interesting dilemma.
His swing on the plate and judgment has impressed manager to such an extent that many believe he will not have any problem in getting spot. Stealing bases and going after loose pitches are some of the things that Marlins as a team have struggled with and
since he has shown promise on this front, he is worth giving nod.
“I love that kid,” Guillen said. “He’s played very good in spring training. Swings the bat very well, making every play wherever we put him. Steals a couple bases. That’s another decision we have to sit down, see how we do it.”
A side having players like Jose Reyes and Hanley Ramirez and standing out with a second best batting average of .375 in Spring Training by him is not a small feet. He holds all what one can expect from a surprise performer.
He possesses an immense talent as a shortstop. Although he can play at first and second base, his seven Minor League outings especially one of 2011 with St. Louis Cardinals reveal that he has been at-ease at shortstop position.
“I’m trying to show my talent to the staff and play the game and have fun,” Solano said. “I don’t know what will happen but I need to keep doing what I’ve been doing.”
While one may believe that Marlins in the end will pick Murphy for his experience, a fact Solano has been through seven Minor League seasons can give management a reason for feeling confident about his Big League credentials.
Along with Reyes, Heath Bell and Mark Buehrle, Solano will be another new face Marlins will find in the season. Since all of them will fetch their spot by dint of sheer talent, curiosity for watching their play in the regular season will be high among fans.
