I was pleased to have been invited to the closing service at St. Ethelburga`s Church in London where the retiring priest Kit Cunningham gave his last service.
For those who don`t know him, Cunningham is a formidable man and one whose counsel (if I were a Catholic) I would have sought relentlessly.
In this his last sermon he inveighed against assimilation and defined the word `culture ` as something which does not only relate to art but also and more importantly relates to identity. He warned Catholics against losing their `culture`.
Now if you relate what Father Kit has said to what is happening in Israel, where would you be? On the outbreak I suspect of World War III.
Having suffered for centuries from antiSemitic nastiness, persecution and extinction, the Jews of Israel are fighting to keep the culture they`ve got (and are being allowed to keep....just)
So why not let them have it and stop referring to them as `colonials`?
Father Kit wouldn`t like it.
