Last year, when Curlin was going into the Derby. Everyone kept saying stuff like "That horse is way to inexperienced, therey's no way he'll win".

So Derby time comes around, and yeah sure, he got third. So what! Third is VERY good for how "inexperenced" he was, or said to be.

So Preakness time now, the stretch run comes and Curlin takes off against Street Sense. Photo finish and one of the closest in Preakness history but still, Curlin won fair and square and he deserved it.

Now, Belmont time. Stretch run comes and now Curlin takes off with Rags To Riches. Even though Rags wins, Curlin was only a head behind!!

\\as the summer races pass//

Breeders Cup Classic time. Stretch run, and wait. Curlin is all alone. He runs off and keeps going by himself. Becoming the winner and yet, HORSE of the YEAR.

So what I'm trying to say is that. I told you ALL that Curlin was going to do great things and you all didn't agree one bit.

So I'd just like to say.

I told ya so!

  1. Curlin is very deserving of Horse of the Year!! I look forward to seeing him race again. Bravo to you Mel for being his champion.

  2. Curlin certainly progressed into quite a talented horse.  However, all of my statements from Derby time were correct.  Until the Derby, the horse had raced like 3 times... a maiden special weight and two races down south against grade 3 competition who weren't nearly as good as what he was gonna face in the Derby.  In April and May, I made a lot of statements about handicapping the Derby and I did say that Curlin wasn't going to win because he didn't have the experience.  I said that any decent Derby contender ought to be winning those GIII races by 10 lengths like Curlin was.  And I was right... Curlin didn't have the experience to win the Derby... he didn't win... he was almost 10 lengths behind the winner.

I never said that Curlin could never win any race against GI competition... I just said he wasn't gonna win that race.  I quite enjoyed watching Curlin progress throughout the summer and I was quite impressed when he beat older horses including Lawyer Ron in the Gold Cup.  I was quite disappointed at the track condition on Breeders Day because it didn't give us a very representative matchup.  It was quite obvious that most of the horses in that field couldn't handle running on the slop.  I wish we could see that matchup again on a fast dirt course to see how those horses actually stacked up against each other.  That said, Curlin did make a good run and proved that he is a really great horse... it was very good to see that the surface didn't affect him like it did Lawyer Ron and Any Given Saturday... and I can't wait to see Curlin race against older horses next year as a 4 year old... I'm very pleased that they decided to keep him racing through a 4 year old year.  Maybe the 2008 Breeders Classic will allow us to relive the Rags to Riches v Curlin matchup from the Belmont!

  3. I love Curlin just as much as you do. From the stretch duel in the Preakness to the Breeders Cup Classic win, he was amazing.

Although Street Sense got him in the Derby, and Rags to Riches nipped him by a nose in the Belmont Stakes, he still tried all three Triple Crown races. Street Sense only ran in 2 of the Triple Crown races, and Rags to Riches was a brand new horse off a month layoff to the Belmont Stakes.

Curlin was amazing in the Breeders Cup though.  He truly showed he was Horse of the Year in the Breeders Cup.

The JCGC was an amazing race! The stretch duel with Lawyer Ron was great! It had me glued to the TV.

Curlin proved that he wanted Horse of the Year honors. Now that he will be racing as a 4 year old, who knows what will happen. I think Steve wants to run him in the Dubai World Cup. It will be long journey but hopefully a winning one!

Mel, you have been a very devoted fan to Barbaro and Curlin, especially after people doubted about Curlin. Kudos to you!

  4. American horses are substandard anyway, you never see them win the arc or any other great race!

  5. I cant wait to see him as a 4 year old
