No there is nothing wrong with it, most people consider that polite and infact some taxi drivers get tips from it.

No, I think it's usually quite interesting and helps relieve boredom.  If you don't want to talk, just politely say so.  Say you're tired or something.

no, usually they are quite entertaining, if you dont want to chat then bury yourself in a book, or answer in very short sentences, they will soon get the message that you dont feel like a chat
