  1. I would tend to agree with you that the used Les Paul Standard is a better deal, especially if it is in good condition.  In fact, some older guitars can actually be worth more.  You can check the guitar's book value by doing search on the guitar (including the year) using google books.  This will usually bring up a result from one of the many guitar blue books.  You might also bring a friend who is knowledgeable about guitars to take a look at the used les paul.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to what you think sounds better.  Make sure you play both through the same high-quality amp.  If you can't tell the difference, the cheaper "studio" is better.  Buy it.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the amp is the most important component of your signal chain.  Many people forget this.  You can connect a beautiful '59 strat to a shite amp, and your '59 will sound like shite.  Likewise you can connect a Yamaha cheapo-special to a Reverb-Special and sound like a champ.  A bad guitar can always be a upgraded with some pickups and strings.  A bad amp is not so easy to fix.  Spend more on your amp then you do on your guitar!
