Donte Greene organizing an exhibition game in Sacramento: NBA Update
Sacramento Kings combo forward Donte Greene is not just a determined player on the court; he is also a strong-minded person off it.
As a proof of that, Greene is on the verge of turning a simple suggestion into reality and is going to host an exhibition game in Sacramento this Sunday.
The event is called “Goon Squad Classic” and it will take place in U.C. Davis Pavilion. In an interview to ABC’s news 10 channel, Donte shed light on how he got the inspiration to hold the event;
"One night, I was bored - just tweeting and a fan tweeted me and said he'd seen me in some of the (exhibition games) I've played in and asked me to bring a game to Sacramento," Greene told News10. “Laying there, Greene and his
wife said, 'why not?'
"I know we've got some great fans out here, so I thought it was a great idea...to give fans basketball during the lockout," Greene said.
The players list includes rookie Jimmer Fredette, who was picked up by the Kings as 10th overall from the 2011 draft. This will be the first time when the Sacramento fans will see Jimmer in action.
Apart from Jimmer, the other expected stars are DeMarcus Cousins, Tyreke Evans and Jason Thompson of the Kings. John Wall will also be there, however the biggest draw will be Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
With the situation in the labour talks only getting worse, Greene felt compelled to give the Sacramento basketball fans some hands on hoops action. The lockout has alienated both the NBA owners and the players in the eyes of the
fans and Greene admitted that it was a very bad situation for the league;
"A lot of fans are mad at the players, a lot of fans are mad at the owners - both sides are taking a pretty bad beating from the fans,"
When asked about the likelihood of the whole NBA season being cancelled, Greene said that it "a very sickening feeling."
However, he was quick to re-iterate his support for the players union and completely backed their actions.
