Dontrelle Willis fails to deliver as San Diego Padres defeat Cincinnati Reds 7-3 – MLB Update
The San Diego Padres made easy work of the Cincinnati Reds as they swept past them 7-3 at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio on Sunday, August 14.
Reds’ starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis could last for only 2.2 innings as he left the game at the top of the third inning citing soreness in the left arm. The damage, however, had been done by then as the Padres piled up four crucial-runs in the third inning
when the left-hander’s quality deteriorated. San Diego did not waste their chances to convert Willis’ wild pitches to their advantage, handing the starter his third loss for the season without a single win to his credit up till now.
The Reds, however, did not lose hope and fought back to manage a three-run fourth inning. This effort was short-lived and the Padres did not allow another scoring chance to their opponents. Wade LeBlanc, San Diego’s starter, excelled at the mound barring
the fourth inning and his performance earned his first win this season. He leaked just two hits in his stretch of six innings from the mound and struck-out six batters in the process.
The only scoring chance of the Reds was helped by Jay Bruce’s three-run home-run which allowed Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips to complete their runs.
LeBlanc was well complemented by the relievers who did not give away a single-run in the remaining three innings to seal the dead-rubber for the Padres, who had already lost the three-game series with losses in the first-two games.
With the game going tough at 4-3 till the sixth inning, the Padres took charge in the seventh inning and then continued the momentum into the eighth and the ninth inning to complete a 7-3 hammering of the Reds.
Jason Bartlett scored in the seventh inning for the Padres before Aaron Cunningham and Cameron Maybin added a run each in the eighth and ninth inning to take San Diego to their 54th win of the season with 68 losses looming their record this season.
The Reds are now 59-62 for the season after a 2-1 victory in the three-game series.
