Dorell Wright still keen on playing abroad – NBA Update
Golden State Warriors Dorell Wright has reiterated his desire to try his hand at basketball outside the United States during the NBA lockout. A number of NBA players have been flirting with the idea since the NBA lockout began
and Wright hinted that he would like to have a go at Chinese basketball.
Since then, the Chinese Basketball Association has put regulation in place that makes it impossible for Wright and many other NBA players to play in the Far East. According to new restrictions put in place, no NBA player will be
allowed an escape clause in their contract for a Chinese team in order to return in case the lockout ends.
FIBA ruled that without an escape clause, no player under contract with an NBA team may play abroad. That pretty much shuts the door on NBA players playing in the Chinese basketball league. Wright sat down for an interview recently
and stated that the door to China may not be open anymore; he still fancied a trip to Europe.
“I understand that rule, but I think Europe could be as much as fun. I’m just taking my time with different options and hopefully, if I finally go there, it’ll be the best situation for me and my family. I would be open to playing
in Europe, overseas. I kind I want to go there. I see a lot of guys are doing it. I think it would be a good experience to go over there and compete against other players.”
It would be interesting to see whether Wright or other main stream NBA players can find employment in Europe. Deron Williams of the New Jersey Nets is so far the highest profile player to have agreed a deal with a European team.
Since then the biggest European clubs have shown a reluctance to sign NBA players who could leave in the middle of the season. The lesser clubs who are willing to take the hit for the high level of talent available do not possess
the financial resources to court the biggest stars.
Wright could be waiting for a call from Europe but in the meantime he has been keeping busy playing in the various pro-am leagues within the United States. Many NBA and amateur players play all around the country in the summer
leagues which provide an outlet for basketball fans.
Since Wright has played a lot of said games he would definitely have been at the end of some serious trash talking. As there are no camera’s and no NBA officials around, the players launch plenty of verbal attacks at each other.
Wright was asked who the biggest trash talker on the circuit was and he named Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce,
“I think Paul might talk more trash than anybody I know [laughs]. I don’t really talk too much trash, I like to be quiet, one of those silent assasins.”
