Question:

Dorm Room Loft Beds?

I'm going to be a college freshman this fall and I need a loft for my bed.

My mattress is 36" x 80" and the loft can't be over 6' tall.

Will i be better off making one of my own or buying one?

Where is a good place to get information about building or buying?

  1. Well at my college they gave us the option of renting loft blocks from the school that were specially made for the beds out of the same wood and stuff. My roommate had her bed lofted so she could put her desk under it and she actually hated it so much she asked them to come take the lofts out. When you are in college sometimes it is so annoying to have to climb all the way up to your bed when all you want to do is pass out on the floor.

Something other students used were cement blocks. I don't know how fashionable they looked, and I don't think it would be safe to try and use them to loft something 6 feet high, but they can give you a good foot or 2 extra.

Before you buy something to loft the bed, find out how high they already are. The beds at my college were already 1.5 feet off the ground so there was plenty of storage space below. The worst that can happen is you get there and see how tall they are and then have to wait a few days to get a loft.
