Question:

Dorm sharing at university?!?

I was wondering how that works. If you share let's say an apartment at university with someone..How does paying for stuff works? or food? or do you just break everything by two? Thank you!

Any experiences? or should I just get a room of my own?

  1. Usually you split costs for some things or take turns buying stuff (which only works if there is a schedule of some sort that everyone agrees to go by). Other than that, you put your name on stuff that is yours- like your favorite cereal, for example, and if there is the room for it, you split up some of the cupboards for your own personal stuff.

Boyfriend/girlfriend situations are usually more share and share alike. There should be more openess in that situation. Sometimes one of the two will actually do most of the paying of things- especially if the other is paying for their own schooling, for example.

  2. I'm not sure how dorms work but I'v lived in apartments with roommates, usually you split everything (rent, electric bill, cable..etc) and as for the food you buy your own.

I'v also lived by myself and that wasn't too fun, it gets boring

I'd say get a roommate, its much cheeper and you have someone to talk to

  3. Me and my roomate share the rent. We split half. But we also do chores, and we divide our duty. Since my friend is richer but lazy, I make him buy all of the groceries, and buy all the appliances needed. And since I like being active, I do all the house chores.

My roomate is awesome! He had no problem with me being g*y. He is someone that makes me reconsider myself to convert from Muslim to Christianity and ended up the g*y lifestyle. Cause he is so awesome!

  4. Here's how it works!

The college will make each of you buy a food plan before entering the dorm! With this you'll be able to buy your food on campus, generally using a point system, so no cash is exchanged! Each of you will have this so there is no need to share food, except for snacks if you so choose!

Also when you sign up for a dorm each of you paid for your rent separately before entering the dorm so you guys won't have to fight about money issues! Also this includes gas, electricity, garbage, and ethernet! The only thing it won't cover is telephone (every one has cellphones now so not a real issue) and cable (if you guys decide you want TV) Then you split the charge!

Dorm life is definitely an experience and a great way to meet friends when first starting college! I recommend that if you can afford it you should spend your first college year in the dorm! Although troubles do arise, often people will swap roommates and such and of course the drama of everyone knowing your business, it really is an adventure!

  5. Pay for everything like rent, utilities, trash, maintenance, etc. 50/50 (or if you've got 2 roommates 33/33/33. You get the idea...) Unless you've got an express agreement to buy and share food, everyone pays for their OWN food. And be SURE to MARK IT as yours. If you've got a lot of friends of friends flowing in and out of the place, be prepared to be missing your last Twinkie or that 2-liter bottle of Mountain Dew. That depends no how respectful you folks are of each others' foodstuffs. If worse comes to worse, by a bar fridge and keep it in your room under lock and key if food theft becomes a contentious point.

  6. break everything by two

  7. Everyone does it differently, but make sure to TALK ABOUT IT beforehand with your roommates.

I share my condo with a roommate. We pay rent and all utilities 50/50. If we buy stuff for the house, like detergent or paper towels, we split in half as well. But we buy our own food and do not share (unless we ask or offer, of course...).

Mark your food or make sure everyone gets their own shelf in the fridge. I have heard of MANY roommate situations really go bad over food.
