Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta says MotoGP must change now – MotoGP news
Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta feels that MotoGP World Championship cannot continue in the present state.
Considering the 2011 premier class season only 17 riders were participating to fill the grid.
In few races, some riders crashed out and dropped the number of riders to complete the race. The contest appears to lose its interest with viewers and sponsors.
Ezpeleta compared the Moto2 and 125cc class which have more than 30 riders on the grid. He reckons that MotoGP must take action to secure its fan following.
While talking to Motosprint magazine, Ezpeleta said, “I don't like the way things are going. I don't like MotoGP these days. We have a series where the Hondas go very quick, some others a bit less, and others even worse. This way there is little fighting,
so the spectacle is unsatisfactory.”
The Dorna chief also added that the championship is not only about the technology domination. It is a sport and a means of entertainment for people. He personally thinks that the competition needs some changes.
From his point of view the last 2011 season seemed like few Hondas running fastest, some chasing it and others in worse conditions. This type of racing might look uninteresting.
Ezpeleta added, “It's clear by now that the way the bikes are built doesn't work anymore. It's not suited to the world's economic situation anymore. If we carry on this way, with the teams lacking the budget to have the bike leased, in 2013 we'll only have
two Hondas on the grid! This sport is not supposed to go this way.”
He further commented his idea that he will halt financial support for the teams to get leased a MotoGP bike.
As expected from onwards the team participating under Claiming Rules Team (CRT) regulations will be supported by Dorna.
He also added that if the MotoGP grid is reduced to only three constructors with total six bikes, Dorna will continue to support CRTs. This step will ensure to get the other 16 bikes on the grid.
Ezpeleta is satisfied with the representation of the Moto2 class that was once heavily criticised. Compared to the MotoGP class, Moto2 is currently providing best spectacle for the viewers.
