Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta hopeful about CRT’s future – MotoGP news
MotoGP chief Carmelo Ezpeleta is very hopeful about the future of CRT bikes in MotoGP and believes that if some of the leading riders were to try the second-class bikes, the results will
be very similar to those of prototypes.
“I think this is impossible, but if any of the top riders would use a CRT, I don't know how big the difference would be,” Ezpeleta said while talking to official MotoGP website.
2012 was the first year for CRT entries in the MotoGP arena. The rule was meant to cut down costs, thus increasing the number of riders and teams competing on any MotoGP season. Although
in the inaugural season, there was a clear difference between the pace of CRT bikes and prototypes, yet CRT riders Aleix Espargaro and Michele Pirro did quite well in the 2012 Valencian Community Grand Prix. Espargaro led most of the round and Honda Gresini’s
CRT rider Pirro finished fifth.
“In our opinion CRT has been a big success for the 2012 season. I know that this was in wet conditions, but in any case, a CRT was leading the Valencia Grand Prix for many laps. The bikes
are not very far away. Theoretically the riders that are using the CRT are not the best,” Ezpeleta said.
Good news for CRT teams is that they will be getting rear tyres from Bridgestone. According to Ezpeleta, this will be plus point for CRT riders and they will give a challenging time to the
prototype riders in the 2013 MotoGP season.
“Now they will have some improvement in the tyres which will give us a big expectation,” said Ezpeleta.
CRT was widely criticised by various MotoGP officials and prototype riders, yet after its inaugural season, the rule has proven to be working. In the upcoming season, on-track competition
will be better and spectators will be able to witness more interesting Grand Prix rounds.
The likes of Colin Edwards, Danilo Petrucci, Michael Laverty and Lukas Pesek will be riding as CRT entries in the upcoming MotoGP season scheduled to start on April 7, 2013 in Qatar.
