Dorna chief Carmelo Ezpeleta hints at addition of new venue to MotoGP schedule – MotoGP news
Head of Dorna Sports Carmelo Ezpeleta expresses support for the proposed Circuit of Wales as a new MotoGP venue. Ezpeleta flew into Wales for a meeting with the Welsh ministers to discuss
the addition of Circuit of Wales to the future MotoGP schedule.
“I hope to bring a MotoGP to the site in 2015 if planners pass the scheme,” Ezpeleta said according to the South Wales Argus.
The Circuit of Wales project is located near, Ebbw Vale, the largest town of Blaenau Gwent county borough in the United Kingdom. It has been reported the project will cost around £250 million
to complete and will encompass an area of 830 acres, with a 3.5 miles long main racetrack. Apart from MotoGP, Circuit of Wales is aimed at hosting other international motorsports events such as World Superbikes, World Motocross and World Touring Cars.
Ezpeleta was excited about the prospect of a new MotoGP venue. According to Ezpeleta, the Circuit of Wales would draw more fans to MotoGP and will also prove beneficial for Wales’ residents
at the same time.
“It's fantastic. I think this is a very, very important program for MotoGP and for motorsport in general. It is good for the area and good for the people and the people behind it will have
our help and whatever they need for the programme. We have been working with the Circuit of Wales officials and we will continue with that. We are more than happy with this program,” Ezpeleta was quoted to have said.
From the perspective of organising a Grand Prix round at the Circuit of Wales, a planning application is around the corner not far away. Right now, the only British MotoGP round is being
hosted at the 3.67 miles long Silverstone Circuit, sometimes known as ‘Home of British Motor Racing’. It is two more seasons until the contract between the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and Northamptonshire’s circuit expires in 2014.
The addition of a new venue will definitely prove useful in promoting MotoGP across the globe, especially in the United Kingdom.
