Question:

Dos Palos Question Repeat?

I'm gonna have to put this up again as my original question was not only abused by some member, but I left abandoned and couldn't due to an Internet hiccup - choose my right answer.

I live in Dos Palos, and have for three years. If one does their research on the town, or probably visits - Las Vegas this town AIN'T. Getting a job has been extremely rough on me and my family is a mixed bag of unhelpful, unfriendly, and unkind, and sometimes very mentally unstable. I would like to know what can I do to help DO MY PART for a small town such as this, as in form a community club of some sort or something. I will repeat that I am no some lazy slacker, and this 21 year old would do anything to redeem himself from being labeled as such.

(I've reported the harassment I got from my last question, and I wanted to voice my opinion to that user personally, but couldn't somehow.)

So for real now, can someone toss me some feedback?

  1. you should volunteer for the radio station in town... you will meet people and then maybe make some connections for a job. Or, you can start your own lawn/yard care biz.  I know people in town need that.  You have to start somewhere...

I saw the person who was rude in your last post...  I was actually hoping you would have gotten more answers last time.  I am orig. from Dos Palos and I know how hard it is to get involved.

  2. Good on you for trying to turn a negative in to a positive.

Ignore the ignorant who give you h**l.

My advice is to first of all pick one thing you love doing or a passionate about.  For me, it would be gardening.

And I would approach the council for permission to use some waste land, put up posters inviting anyone interested in starting an organic community garden to meet me at the site on ....... where everyone can put in ideas and start a plan of action.

So first, pick your thing, whatever it is

Second, get council ok / permission to use whatever you need

    Third, put up some posters

Forth, don't be put off if only a couple arrive.  Energy has a way of attracting more energy.  Before long, you will have a bunch of people just as enthusiastic as you involved.

    Good luck.

  3. Hello -

I am sorry that you got such a nasty reponse on your first attempt to ask this question. I am afraid that the information that you gave is so broad, that it is difficult to know where to start.

Are you looking for something interesting for yourself to do or trying to do something to improve the community - or both at the same time?

I looked up Dos Palos as I had never heard of it before. It looks like very small town with not many opportunities. I take it from your question that you are not interested in going somewhere else for work, college, or other opportunities?

As I see it, these are some options you could consider:

    1) You could find some paid work or volunteer work to do on-line (there are a million causes looking for eager participants)

    2) You could get involved in local politics to improve things in your town

    3) You could get involved with a local church or non-profit and assist with their community building projects

    4) Same as number 3, but with a local school

    5) You could start your own non-profit

There are so many, many things that you could do with your time and energy that I don't even know where to start. You need to determine what it is that really excites you and go from there.

And instead of focusing on what your community lacks and comparing it to a big city with limitless opportunities, try focusing on what is good about it that you can enhance, develop, or promote.....
