  1. In my opinion any major name brand is a good choice for reliability. Merc, Evinrude, Yamaha and so forth. No matter what engine manufacturer a new design will always have problems. Some smaller than others on one design change then larger than others on other design changes. Just make sure you have a service shop with certified techs around to work on them. Depending what area you are in will determine the amount of service shops that have certified techs. For instance here on grand lake we are mainly Mercury and Mercruiser shops. Not one volvo penta that I can think of. So it all depends on your area. That doesnt mean we cant work on them in our shop but just noone is certified.

  2. I had one on the back of a 25 ft. mako and I used it in salt water and never had any kind of a problem with it. I don't think that evinrude makes a bad motor. I'll bet the other dealer was a Mercury dealer. If maint. was done on the motor, it will last you a very long time.

  3. All depends on the year. FICHT technology is sound, however OMC went belly up due to quality control issues with the parts used, especially on the 200's. If it is a 1999-2001 stay away from it. The resale is poor, and if it is still running, you'll never know. They were prone to fires and major problems. When Bombardier bought the companies hulk, the destoyed 5 million dollars worth of brand new parts that did not pass QC.
