Dota 2 Hero Spotlight: Mortred the Phantom Assassin
Introduction
Calling Mortred the Phantom Assassin one of the strongest heroes in Valve’s Defense of the Ancients (Dota) 2 would definitely not be an over-statement, though it is subject to one extremely important conditions; her farming. She is literally as fragile as
she looks, but her abilities allow her to cause utter havoc. They do not appear to be that tough looking, but do not let that fool you as she is definitely capable of making her opponents bleed. Being an agility carry, she is a real power-house and is renowned
for her potential to send her enemies to heaven, or h**l as that is where she would probably like to see her foes end up, with just one blow.
Stifling Dagger
Phantom Assassin’s first ability is calling Stifling Dagger. It is a single-target skill that allows her to reduce the movement speed of the targeted unit by 50 percent for a duration of four seconds. Upon impact, the dagger also deals 200 pure damage to
creeps, while enemy heroes will be dealt half of this damage. With the cool-down of only four seconds, the skill can easily be spammed to take out as many creeps as possible as the 200 pure damage is excellent for last hitting. While the enemy heroes have
very little to fear as far as the 100 pure damage is concerned, they will however be significantly affected by the slow mechanic that accompany it, something that synergises quite well with her ultimate that we will get to later.
Blink Strike
Her second ability is called Blink Strike. It works pretty much in the same manner as Rikimaru’s Blink Strike skill, causing Phantom Assassin to blink to a targeted allied or enemy unit within a range of 1000 units. If the target is an enemy unit, Phantom
Assassin will gain a 100 percent boost in her attack speed for either the next four attacks or for a duration of three seconds, whichever is exhausted first. This skill has both an offensive as well as defensive role, allowing her to either surprise her enemies
by getting in striking range within a blink of an eye, or escape an imminent death by blinking to a nearby ally and making a run for it.
Blur
Her fourth skill is called Blur. It is a passive ability that gives Phantom Assassin a 35 percent chance of evading physical damage. The mechanic is similar to that of evasion provided by items and thus therefore do not stack with items such as Butterfly.
One more thing about the skill is that it gives Phantom Assassin 80 percent transparency if a non-invisible enemy unit is present within a 1600 radius. This will make it harder for the enemy players to see her and notice her presence. There is, however, a
1.5-second delay in the activation as well as deactivation of transparency.
Coup de Grace
Phantom Assassin’s ultimate is called Coup de Grace. While the skill appears to be quite simple in nature, a right set of items end up making it one of the most powerful skills in the game. Once the skills is maxed to Level 3, it will passively give Phantom
Assassin a 15 percent change of dealing a critical strike of four-times the normal damage. This is the highest amount of critical in the game and end up making 1000-plus crits a common sight on the battlefield.
Phantom Assassin is indeed a huge asset for her team in battles. Due to her potential to deal huge amounts of damage in a short span of time, she would find herself targeted in team-battles first. Her sustainability may not be the highest, but a life-steal
item works extremely well with her ultimate to keep her alive even when taking a lot of damage.
