  1. i think you should think about bending before you jump and when you do just jump straight up ..dont worry about the rotation it'll come around it's more about the height right now

  2. I feel your pain!  :)  You're coach is probably right.  Start thinking positive, don't worry about skaters around you, and think that you CAN land it.  Try going on the harness again with your coach, but have your coach only help you some of the time......but not tell you when.  You'll probably be surprised that you can land it even on the times you have no help.  This helped me with jumps...if you can, unclip the belt from the harness and just do the jump with the belt on.  For some crazy reason, sometimes having that belt still on confuses your BRAIN and lets your BODY land the jump!!!  :)  Stupid brain thinks too much sometimes!  Don't worry that your friend landed it before you.....just work on making yours better.  There's a difference between someone landing a jump early and someone who does a very nice technically perfect jump.

With all that out of the way, just be sure you're reaching straight back with your picking foot, you're bending your front foot and you get good spring off the front foot.  Go back and study your take offs on the ice.  How straight are they?  Which edge did you take off from?  Spring, get a good snap into your backspin and it's smooth sailing there on out.  You CAN do it.  :)

  3. I'd say stop looking at what other skaters are doing and focus more on yourself. Every skater learns figures at a different pace and every skater has stronger jumps. I'm abysmally crappy at the Toe Loop, but my Lutz is one of my strongest jumps.

I don't use the harness myself, after a bad experience with a coach abusing it, I've never used a harness again. The harness artificially helps you with these jumps because it gives you extra height which gives you more time to complete the rotations and as others have said, by allowing you to never fall on it, it leaves you without the distraction some skaters have of having to fall always.

Not my case though since I rarely fall myself, but the added height is a reason why you can do the jump with the harness and underrotate without it.

Back in 2000 or something I had a solid Double Sao (but nothing else) but stopped skating for my university studies and now that I'm back training I can do Singles and a half on the 5 jumps consistently. I just need more height and to lock my arms together. Just keep working a lot off the ice (ever used jump ropes before?) and if possible, try to find a fitness coach that specializes in jumping sports, they could make your muscles stronger to get those extra inches to finish rotation.

  4. Don't worry just keep practicing! I started landing my double-lutz almost right after my double-flip but I was under rotating too. Some things to keep in mind are to not flutz it by going onto an inside edge, on the take-off imagine pulling your whole body over your back leg and then rotating because if you're not over your take-off foot you won't rotate properly and always always always remember to check your shoulders before taking off. I can't stress the getting over your foot and checking enough because they are essential to getting the proper air position and take-off so that you can rotate it properly.

On the harness you have the extra lift so its easier to get into the proper air position and take off correctly, but without the harness you just have to bend a get over that foot a little more. Practice off ice exercises for it such a just planning out the jump on the ground and keeping your right foot behind as you would for take-off and then jumping and bringing your other foot so you're over top of the take-off foot.

    Hope I helped!

p.s. your coach is right believe in yourself and anything is possible:)

  5. keep practicing

  6. the reason you are able to do it on the harness is it gives you that little extra height/boost from your coach and the confidence of not hurting yourself and falling with security so your less nervous of throwing yourself in the air. just pretend/convince yourself that your on the harness when your not and dont be nervous. 'just do it'. think about your alignment/posture, arms, and take off. the most important parts. assuming you have other doubles down, you should be familiar with rotating and pulling in properly. focus on the take off

good luck!! you'll get it soon!!
