Question:

Double Standards on dead people?

This might sound wierd, but

There is this double standard that I TOTALLY agree with.

Dead people who were good get respect and have funerals and they are remembered. They are missed

Dead people who were bad don't get respect, don;t have funerals, and people are glad that they are dead. They are not missed.

Examples of dead bad people: Seung-h*i Cho, Eric Harris and Dylan Kebloid.

Nobody respects them and people think that they deserve to die.

Examples of dead good people: Ronald Regan, Martin Luther King.

People respect them

I totally agree with this

Your thoughts?

  1. Basically I agree.  But what always amazes me at funerals that I attend is that according to the officiating clergy, everyone goes to heaven, no exceptions.  I say that because of the stock expression that they always use:  "He's in a better place now."

They say this no matter how good or bad that person has been during his lifetime.  What a crock!

  2. I believe that they *do* have funerals, they just aren't widely publicised. I'm sure that the Klebolds and Harris' miss their sons. I'm sure they had a small funeral and/or memorial service. It just wasn't televised.

The thing is, No one is any better or worse than anyone else. Most people are just a waste of flesh. Martin Luther King was a philanderer. Just because he accomplished good things publicly, does not mean he was a saint in his private life. I would venture to say that there were women who attended his funeral who where not as sad as they looked.

Reagan was a douche bag and I don't need to say anything more than that.

As for Harris and Klebold, while what they did was unexcusable, they opened up the media and the public's eyes to many thereto ignored social issues such as the ferocity of present day school bullying and its effects on many teens, teen depression, the inefficacy and harmfullness of many antidepresents being prescribed to kids, and a host of other issues. They opened up many parent's eyes to what was going on with their upset and distraught teenagers.

I think that it eould be beneficial for you to examine your dichotomous thinking a little bit closer and try to see the good  in the bad and the bad in the good. They cannot exist without eachother.

  3. Well, dead is dead and the funerals are for the living.

As for your choices of good and bad, they are debatable.

Cho, Harris and Klebold were obviously mental cases.

Ronnie Raygun caused a lot more suffering than they ever did, and at least one person disliked M.L.K. enough to put him 6 feet under the surface of the Earth, along with JFK and Lincoln.

I also understand the use of remembering the great monsters of the human race and remembering them as a warning of what happens if we blindly follow power.

People like Caligula, Nero and Hitler.
