  1. Different syllables work for different situations but the key to getting good at double tonguing is practicing VERY SLOWLY at first.

Try using "Tea Kay" and imitate the sound of a ticking clock without the horn.

Go real slow, do you notice how the "Kay" sound is in the back of your throat, make the "Kay" sound by itself don't be shy be very pro active.

Try just "Kay" articulations on the trumpet. Use a metronome maybe quarter = 60 and "play" a "Kay" articulation on the upbeats. Let this be strong you might want to even go for strong accents. Be willing to make some not so nice sounds on the trumpet at first, it will go away quickly.

Now very slowly with a METRONOME do slow sets of eight notes using "TEA" "KAY" with a strong accent on "Kay"

This will sound pretty bad at first don't worry it will get better, once this doesn’t feel so awkward try it without the accent.

Then alternate back and forth with and without the accent.

Do this on single notes for awhile then try to play scales or scale sequences. THE ARBAN METHOD has pages of drills if you don't want to make up your own.

Move the metronome up a little everyday, and when you're just walking around or killing time make that "Ticking Clock" sound (away from the horn) but with best disciplined rhythm (double tonguing is one technique that you can improve a lot away from the horn)

Even when you get comfortable go back and practice super "SLOW" this is the not so secret way of learning to use multiple tongue. Last time PRACTICE SLOWLY EVEN WHEN YOU"RE GOOD AT IT!!!!

Last point, for everything you practice always remember to check you're body language and make sure you're not getting tense (shoulders, neck, throat, ect...) shake it out take nice relaxing breaths (yawn type). Tension doesn't help any aspect of brass playing.
