Are there any other advantages of double hung windows other than they're easier to clean?? Is there a big price difference between the 2??

  1. Double hungs are usually a little less expensive as there aren't many moving parts and the weatherstripping is quite simply as the window sash just move up and down.

The are also the easiest to get out of in case of a fire.

They also don't swing out which can cause some issues if you have a sidewalk along your home where someone could walk into an open crankout window (casement style).

They are much easier in accomodating a window air conditioner unit also.

Sometimes double hung windows can cause a obstruction issue as the line where bottom and top sash meets can kill a nice view. Casement windows are all one pc. with no center joint, therefore they are a little nicer if you are wanting to bring a really nice view into your sight line from inside the house.

Double hungs are a little easier to fit blinds, shades, etc. to.

Some casements create problems as the cranks won't let shades go all the way down to the sill, you can't install and remove insect screens once you hang blinds, and you may need to install one large blind, shade on multiple casement units that are together, rather than a blind on each one.

So there are a few differences to think about.

    * Many casements today are made so you can clean them from the inside also.

There are also sliding or gliding windows, awnings which allow ventilation even in rainy weather.

More important is buying a quality window. One that the company has been in business under the same name for over 30 years. Do you really want to put up with a $99 window for years to come?

  2. about 1/3 cheaper, the single hung, they only have 1/2 screens so that looks funny from the crub.....i like double hung cause i can lower the upper window and the cat will not jump up and tear up the screen while on the sill........and yes easy to clean on the tilt windows...

  3. In modern, low ceiling, air conditioned homes there really is no advantage to them. In homes a hundred years ago the ceilings were twelve feet, or more, and no AC. The double hung window allowed you to lower the top half way and raise the bottom half way. That let cool air (being heavier) enter at the bottom and warm air (being lighter) exit at the top creating air circulation to help keep the house somewhat cool.

  4. The style/architecture type of your home might be better suited for a double hung window versus single hung.

  5. you can get them on sale for 99 dollars a window right know.installed.
