Double joy for England in Yonex Polish International 2012 – Badminton News
The judgment day of the Yonex Polish International was certainly a day of double joy for England as their Women’s doubles team Mariana Agathangelou-Heather Olver also ruled the court in title match on March 25, 2012.
They followed the success path set by their compatriot mixed doubles pair Nathan Robertson-Jenny Wallwork earlier.
The World Number 29 pair Olver-Agathangelou outclassed their challengers Eva Lee-Paula Obanana from USA in straight sets with decisive margin of 21-12 and 23-21.
It was a smooth sailing for Olver-Agathangelou in opening set of the match as they grabbed the first match point with great ease. The champs excelled in all areas of the game and established their tactical and technical supremacy by staying nine points ahead
of their rivals in final score of the first set.
The World Number 31 pair Lee-Obanana put up a great fight in the following set and did not allow their rivals to pocket the second match point easily.
The British pair had to sweat hard until the last shot was played as they were down at the crucial set point but they stormed back and sealed the glory with a tight yet decisive 23-21 score on the board.
The victorious duo Olver-Agathangelou was a bit relieved after this nerve-racking tussle and both ladies were over the moon after escorting their country to glory.
The champion pair said, “We got a little be nervous towards the end of that second set but we are obviously so happy to eventually take the match and do the double over the Americans.”
The Women’s doubles partnership of Mariana Agathangelou and Heather Olver will be tested now in the Finnish Open which is going to be taking place from March 29, 2012.
The young shuttlers Olver and Agathangelou are determined to use their vital experience of their 39-minute tussle in the title match of Polish Open, in the Finnish venture also.
They said, “It has been a long few weeks for us and it’s not finished yet as we go to Finland next week.”
Earlier on the final day of Polish Open, the mixed doubles pair of England Robertson-Wallwork earned the crown for country by beating the compatriot rivals Ben Stawski and Lauren Smith in the title match.
