Double joy for Indonesia in Men’s Doubles event of Badminton Asia Championships
It was day of double joy for Indonesia as two of their Men’s Doubles teams cleared first hurdle and earned seats in pre quarter-finals of Badminton Asia Championships on April 18, 2012.
World Number 11 duo of Alvent Yulianto Chandra-Hendra Aprida Gunawan paved path to victory by stamping the scratch pair Thien How Hoon-Wee Kiong Tan of Malaysia. The other Indonesian pair Angga Pratama-Ryan Agung Saputra followed the successful trail by
leaving behind Erdenebayar Enkhbold-Zolzaya Munkhbaatar of Mongolia.
In their opening match of the event, Alvent-Hendra dominated in most part of the 52-minute fight against Thien How-Wee Kiong and emerged as Champions with final figures 12-21, 21-18 and 21-15.
Malaysians stunned their higher ranked rivals with amazing badminton skills in the first set of the match. They forged a fruitful chemistry to win first match point.
Earlier, both contenders did not allow each other to set up a distinctive lead and remained close with 11-10 score before the half time.
After the interval, Thien How-Wee Kiong attacked in selected areas and bagged nine out of last 11 points to end the first set with 21-12 score in their favour.
Next game of the match was full of drama as earlier it looked like the Malaysians will wrap the show with straight-set victory but later Alvent-Hendra stormed back and turned their rivals’ plan into dust.
Indonesians accelerated their pace when it mattered and levelled the lead with a tight yet decisive margin of 21-18.
However, the third set was completely dominated by Alvent-Hendra as they sealed the victory with 21-15 score on board.
Later, their compatriots Angga Pratama and Ryan Agung Saputra doubled the celebration with a swift win over their rival duo Erdenebayar Enkhbold-Zolzaya Munkhbaatar. They took just 14 minutes to seal their straight-set victory.
The Mongolians remained at the lower end throughout the match and ultimately knelt down after reading 21-9 and 21-6 scores on the board.
This first round wins ensured Indonesia’s presence in second round where its prime duo Alvent-Hendra will lock horns with Cambodian pair Sok Chanthorn-Kanora Ngoun. While the other couple Angga Pratama-Ryan Agung will face a tough challenger Hirokatsu Hashimoto-Noriyasu
Hirata of Japan.
