Double layer explanation?

could someone explain to me (keep it simple please} the term Double layer in the disc format.thanks in advance,groucho.

I assume you mean what's also termed Dual Layer. There are two layers on the disk. The top one is semi-transparent, so by shining the laser slightly differently, it can look at the second layer.
