Question:

Double major in college?

I have a passion for both writing, and dancing. The two things I most definitely cannot live without. I want to move out of my house on my 18th birthday and go to a local university to study. Only problem is I am torn between the two. I have resorted to a double majoring option. How much longer would this take? Would it be hard considering the two different fields? Any worries I should have or concerns? Thank you. Your answers would be very much appreciated!

  1. You can still do it in four years if you choose your classes wisely and don't waste any credit hours on stuff you don't need.

And don't listen to those people who said you will be "returning home" if you major in these fields. You will probably not be the richest person in the world, but at least you are doing that you love.

Any college degree is better than no degree at all. Keep that in mind.

  2. I am assuming by double major you mean two Bachelor's Degrees? Well a bachelor's degree is 120 credits, every other Bachelor's degree is 60 credit hours.

So for a double major it would take you an extra five semesters at 12 credit hours per semester. So it would be an extra 2 1/2 years, even less if you opt for summer classes.

Not hard, just time consuming like everything else which involves education.

    No worries what-so-ever.

  3. Dancing is a dead end major.  The truth hurts but thats the truth.  IF you major in this you will be returning home after you graduate.

Change your major and be more realistic.  Seriously.  If you need help contact me.  But pls dont do that.  And stay away from humanities majors.  Only minor in them.  If oyu want to earn money listen to me.  I am writing this to save you the trouble I have gone through so other misled people understand what is ahead of you.

  4. I double majored in two unrelated fields too and it only took me 4 years.  But it can depend on the course load you are willing/able to take each semester, when required courses are offered, and other factors.  I would suggest meeting with advisors from both majors.  Find out the requirements for both majors, and talk to them about the fact that you want to double major.  See what they have to say, and how possible they think it would be.

I had a friend, though, who I believe was a dancing major and wanted to go into medicine (so she had to do all of the medicine pre-requisite science classes).  I can't remember much about what she said, but I know her schedule was really busy with performances and practices for her dance major.  That might make it difficult to do, but I doubt impossible.  She was still able to fit in her science courses just fine each semester.  I don't know much about dance majors, but I would assume that for you dance would be the more rigidly structured major, so it might involve fitting your writing courses into your dance schedule.

I hope that helps - talk to the departments, they can probably help out more.  Advisors are the best help there is.
