Double standard in Hip Hop?

why do Rappers in a group to begin their careers must have a solo classic album to move up to legend status yet solo artists do not have to have a classic group album? (with some exceptions)

why is a solo artist with 3 classics > a group member with 3 group classics?

dont come out and say a group member relies on others to help because some solo artists might not be able to share the spotlight with other people for a whole album.... thoughts

  1. Very interesting...

Chuck D is a legend and he's part of P.E

Andre 3K is a future Legend

Almost every member in Wu Tang will reach the legend status...

  2. I feel that as a solo artist you are alone, you  are blamed for the bad songs and praised for the good ones. In a group, there are other to either point the finger at or take the blame, and when a member from a group does something good, it is as if everyone in the group did good.

  3. Because.  In a group you could be propelled by the other artists.  A solo classic album shows that you are that good by yourself.  For example Wu-Tang has some classics but you don't call U-God a legend because RZA, Method, GZA, Deck & Ghostface propelled the album, he just contributed a bit.

There are some exceptions.  Black Thought has released classics with The Roots, but none solo, but I'd call him a legend, but this is because he is the main MC in the group.

  4. There are lots of "legends" out of groups.. But I'm sure you mean G.O.A.T. nominees or whatever..

Anyway.. When an artist is in a group you don't know how much of the **** they've written by themselves cos lyrics get thrown around and everything.. and also if they do brilliantly on a record it means they might have only done brilliantly on 1/4 of a record.. They need a full album by themselves to prove they can do it consistently.
