Question:

Double walled stove pipe? ?

I am about to install a wood burning stove on a stone wall with the pipe going up the wall (about 2 metres) and going through the wall adirectly into a chimney next door. The stove is black and as the pipe will be visable until it reaches the chimney, i would like it black to match. my plumber has given me a price for a double walled pipe made from steel which (in france, or at least in his company) does not exist in black. does anybody know if a double walled pipe is actually necessary in my case? I'm aware that he'll always offer the most expensive option. Also, is it possible if it's safer to have single black piping on the wall and then double up the chimney. I would be very grateful for any advice. Thanks, Lesley

  1. The double wall pipe is for your safety.  Have you considered painting the pipe with heat resistant paint.  I know here in the US they make a spray paint that is for that purpose.  It use to be called stove black or something, but I have seen heat resistant paint in the local discount store in the last couple of weeks.  Not more than about $5 a can.

  2. Most auto parts stores carry black engine enamel, which will take the heat.
