Doubles coach Rexy Mainaky says Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong need more physical fitness

Rexy Mainaky, Malaysia’s Doubles coach says that the major reason behind the poor performance of Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong in the Men’s Doubles category at the 2011 BWF World Championships was the lack of physical fitness. They need more fitness to
rise to the highest level of the game which depends on how fast and agile they are in the court.
Koo Kien and Tan Boon lost to Ko Sung Hyun and Yoo Yeon Seong of Korea in the Men’s Doubles quarter-final by playing poor badminton and again failed to make their mark on the Korean pair.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), after observing the reasons of the poor performance of doubles shuttlers, came to the conclusion that there is something wrong in the training program designed by coach, Rexy Mainaky. However, Rexy said, “I am
open to criticism as it will make me a better coach. But, I hope that they will not resort to just blaming one party.”
While talking about the physical condition of the shuttlers, Rexy said, “We need to step up the agility training for the players. Our players did not attack the shuttle at the top of the net like the Koreans. Our players got off to a brilliant start but
could not sustain their form. It all leads to their physical condition.”
The coach insisted that the only reason of the sufferings of Koo Kien - Tan Boon is their physical conditioning and if they improve on their physical fitness, they will be able to get a breakthrough at the 2012 London Olympics.
He said, “I would prefer the NSI to focus on weight training for the players at the gymnasium and let me focus on the agility training for the players on the court.”
The coach is looking forward on the Olympic Games which are less than a year away and he is ready to take the challenge to lift the level of the shuttlers. Koo Kien and Tan Boon, who are currently World Number 5, will be the best hope for Malaysia in the
2012 London Olympics.
