Doubles draw enter the semi-final round, Bryans looking strong – Rogers Cup 2012
Matches of the Rogers Cup have suffered at the hands of heavy showers on Thursday but yet the semi-final round is about to take off on Saturday afternoon. Three of the quarter-final final matches took place on Friday, while the
top seeded pair of Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor is yet to compete in the round of eight.
Former world number one duo of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan stood victorious against the unseeded team of Paul Hanley and Nenad Zimonjic in the quarter-finals. The Bryan Brothers formulated a 7-5, 6-1, victory to carry on their sublime
form in Toronto, Canada. Earlier that day, Bob and Mike had to played their second round clash against the combination of Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo in convincing straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. The second seeded Americans played exquisite tennis in both of their
matches and move a step closer to the title round of the ATP Masters Series event.
Zimonjic was the defending champion of the doubles at Rogers Cup, as he teamed up with Michael Llodra of France last year to list the coveted target. His tandem with Hanley didn’t prove successful enough this season, forcing him
to fall out in the quarter-final round.
Fourth seeded Robert Lindstedt of Sweden and Horia Tecau of Romania were the other semi-finalist pair on Friday. They had a fierce battle against the seventh seeded Pak-Dutch tandem of Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer,
eventually coming out as the winner in three sets. Lindstedt and Tecau took one hour and 23 minutes to settle the three-setter at 6-4, 3-6, 10-7, to dispose of one of the hot favourite duo from the tournament.
Third quarter-final battle of the day proved out to be a stunning one, as the third seeded Pole duo of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski crashed out of the draw in dismay. A top class performance from the fifth seeded team
of Jurgen Melzer and Leander Paes left the hot favourite Pole contenders stranded in the end. Melzer and Paes finished off the battle in three gruelling sets, 7-6(5), 4-6, 10-6, to book a spot in the semi-finals.
On the other hand, top seeded Mirnyi and Nestor might have to play two successive matches on Saturday. Initially they will take on the eighth seeded Spanish tandem of Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez in the quarter-final draw and
if successful, will take on Lindstedt and Tecau for a spot in the title match.
