Doubles shuttler Goh Liu Ying struggles on court due to her back injury – Badminton news
Malaysia’s Doubles expert Goh Liu Ying got a back injury and could not live up to expectations in the last week’s Selangor Open as she with her partner Chan Peng Soon lost the final of the tournament to Lee Chong Wei and Vivian Hoo.
Liu Ying, who is World Number Nine in Mixed Doubles world rankings, did not play in the Mixed Doubles category in the domestic tournament because of her injury.
She participated in only Mixed Doubles with Peng Soon and lost the final contest with a 15-21 and 25-27 margin to Chong Wei and Vivian.
It was an unexpected result for the top couple in Malaysia as Liu Ying’s injury prevented her from playing to her maximum potential.
Jeremy Gan, the Mixed Doubles national coach, is not worried over the result of Selangor Open as he already knew that Liu Ying was injured. He also wanted the shuttler not to work too hard that could aggravate her back injury.
Jeremy said, “She aggravated a back injury training for the Selangor Open and that forced her to make some sacrifices in the tournament.”
He further added, “She had to take three days off from training due to the injury. The doctor assessed her condition and advised her that she shouldn’t push herself too hard, which is why she had to withdraw from the women’s doubles event with her partner
Lim Yin Loo.”
However, Liu Ying is set to participate in German Open Grand Prix Gold, which will start from today at Anaheim, Germany.
The Malaysian will participate in Women’s Doubles with Lim Yin Loo and will also play in the Mixed Doubles event with Chan Peng Soon.
In the Women’s Doubles draw, Liu Ying and Yin Loo will start their campaign in the qualifying event.
They have been placed in the lower half of the draw along with Thailand’s Savitree Amitrapai-Sapsiree Taerattanachai and England’s Jenny Wallwork-Gabrielle White.
In the Mixed Doubles draw, Liu Ying and Peng Soon will face Debby Susanto and Muhammad Rijal of Indonesia in the opening round of the tournament.
However, Liu Ying’s performance depends on her physical condition and the severity of her injury.
