Doubles title in the bag, Sara Errani aims for the singles gold at Roland Garros – Tennis Special

After her series of upsets at the most elite platform of tennis, the Rolland Garros French Open, Italian 21st seed Sara Errani has earned the title of the ‘Princess of Upsets’. The 25-year-old has been in supreme form
in this coveted tournament and has already bagged the doubles championship title with her compatriot, Roberta Vinci.
A much tougher task lies ahead of Errani this weekend, when she is going to square off against the three-time Grand Slam champion, Maria Sharapova of Russia, in the final of the singles draw. The second seeded Russian diva has
already risen to the world number one spot by qualifying for the title match in Paris, France and is ever hungry for another Major trophy to complete her Career Slam.
Huge speculations are made about the upcoming women’s final showdown at the Roland Garros when the queen of tennis, Sharapova, will take on ‘the Cinderella’, Errani, for the gold. The Italian underdog is certainly not intimidated
by the superior rank and the blistering form of the new world number one opponent. She was ecstatic on winning the doubles crown on Friday and believes that she will carry on her winning roll in the Saturday’s crunch match as well.
"Tomorrow I will think about the singles,” Errani said after her doubles title win. “I don't want to think about tomorrow now - it's not a good idea. I prefer to relax. Tomorrow we will see what happens."
"Now Sara is happy, confident and strong," said Errani’s doubles partner, Vinci. "We will see what will happen tomorrow, but she really has nothing to lose in the final."
And rightly so, the Italian surely has nothing to lose in the final at all. Becoming the world number one player, Sharapova has a huge burden upon her shoulders and a defeat at the hands of an inferior-ranked opponent on the grandest
of venues is something she certainly cannot think of. The Russian tennis queen has all the other three Grand Slam trophies in her bag except the French Open. It is a perfect opportunity for her to complete her Career Slam, a feat which has been achieved by
just nine other women tennis players but it is easier said than done.
So, with the big ego of the world number one and the Career Slam opportunity on the line, can Sharapova deliver her best? Well, her abilities are beyond any doubts and she has already proved her command over the game throughout
all these years but the pressure in the upcoming match will certainly be huge. Errani has already achieved something she didn’t dream of while coming to Paris and anything above that will be bonus for her.
"Errani, as amazingly and bravely as she'd played, I just don't see how it can be enough for Maria's return of serve," explained 18-time Grand Slam champion, Martina Navratilova. “(The return) is her best shot, and Errani's serve
is her worst shot.”
The stage is set for the big match and the two contenders about to engage in their first ever singles encounter. Stakes are higher for Sharapova but everyone has to wait and see Errani deliver yet another upset victory at this
year’s Roland Garros.
