Doug Collins wants to coach the Philadelphia 76ers for the next four seasons – NBA News
As the joy of the U.S basketball team winning yet another gold medal in the London Olympics earlier this month fades away, USA Basketball knows that they have a few serious issues that need their immediate attention.
The most important out of all the issues is the naming of a new head coach for team U.S.A, after current head coach Mike Krzyzewski decided he would not be around for the 2016 Olympics to be held in Rio de Janeiro.
Krzyzewski led the U.S team to their second straight gold medal at the Olympics, but now feels that the time has come for him to end his tenure with the US basketball team. And among the names being taken for his replacement, Gregg
Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs leads the pack. Doc Rivers of the Boston Celtics is a close second, but there are some people who are also taking the name of Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doug Collins.
Collins, a veteran coach in the NBA, talked to the Philadelphia Inquirer and said:
“It’s a tremendous honour that somebody would even throw my name out there. It’s four years down the road and I understand in this business you hope you are an active coach at the time.”
Collins said that he hoped he would be coaching till then, and added that he would like to remain the coach of the Sixers for the next four to five seasons.
“I am hoping that I am still active and I would like to coach four or five years in Philadelphia,” added Collins.
Collins is right in wanting to coach the Sixers for the foreseeable future, as they are looking like an interesting team for next season and beyond. The arrival of Andrew Bynum from the Los Angeles Lakers has given the Sixers a
dominant presence at the centre position, and a young All Star player who can develop into the franchise player of the future.
However, Bynum is not used to being the focus of the defence, and will take some time to adjust to his new role. Also, it is yet to be seen if he can rise to the expectations of the Sixers fans and front office and embrace the
role of the leader of the Sixers. It also remains to be seen how he adjusts with the Sixers core, which includes Evan Turner and Jrue Holiday. Nonetheless, next season is going to be an intriguing one for the Sixers, where they will find out the answers to
all these questions.
