Doug Fister helps Detroit Tigers beat Cleveland Indians 7-1 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers finally managed to put things back on the right track as they flattened the Cleveland Indians 7-1 at Comerica Park on Wednesday, September 5 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland will be very pleased with what he saw from the pitching rotation and the batting line-up on Wednesday. After failing miserably in the opening two games, Tigers’ offence produced a masterful performance in the finale to avoid a
humiliating series defeat.
With their win, the Tigers also managed to close the gap between themselves and Chicago White Sox to just one game at the top of American League Central Division standings table. Leyland will be expecting his men to bring some consistency in their results
to improve their chances of lifting the AL Central title for the second straight time.
"When everybody else knows the importance of it, obviously the players, the manager and the coaches know the importance of it," Leyland said. "The fans know. I'm sure they'll be watching, and there will be some late nights for them, maybe when we're in Anaheim.
Then off to Chicago.”
Miguel Cabrera continued his excellent hitting form as he homered to right in the first inning to put Tigers on the board. Andy Dirks tripled to right and Cabrera hit a sacrifice fly to right to stretch Tigers’ lead to 4-1.
Prince Fielder also had a decent outing as he smacked a solo home-run to left centre and Jhonny Peralta doubled to left in the eighth inning to take the lead beyond Indians reach. Starting pitcher Doug Fister produced a match winning performances as he gave
up just four hits and a run in seven solid innings for his eighth win of the season.
"Our fate's in our own hands," Detroit’s right-hander Doug Fister said. "We control our own destiny, we just have to take care of what we do."
"To put up six or five or whatever we did in that inning, it was good," Dirks said of the eighth inning.
Relief pitchers Joaquin and Jose Valverde combined to toss up two perfect innings to help the Tigers complete a deserving victory.
