Doug Fister’s pitching helps Detroit Tigers defeat Oakland Athletics 3-1 - MLB Update

Detroit Tigers’ starter, Doug Fister had a notable day with his pitching as he threw eight innings and struck-out five batters with an ERA of 2.98 in the Tigers’ 3-1 victory against the Oakland Athletics at O.co Coliseum, Oakland on September 16.
During the first inning, Austin Jackson and Delmon Young both ground out while Don Kelly lined out to first base without adding even a single run for the Tigers. Similarly, Athletics’ centre-fielder Coco Crisp flied out while Jemile Weeks and Hideki Matsui
both made their way back after being ground out without any run at the bottom of first inning.
Athletics kept the momentum of the last game and opened their scoring account during second inning to get a 1-0 lead. Josh Willingham struck a solo homer (418 feet) towards centre-field to give a solid start to Athletics. In the third inning, Tigers tied
the game 1-1 when Kelly drove a single-run shot to right-field and Ramon Santiago posted a tie run.
The batters failed to recover their batting tricks in the fourth and fifth inning. Fister permitted just one run, three hits, one home-run and one earned run on his 91 pitches.
In the sixth inning, Wilson Betemit drove a triple-run shot to deep right-centre and Jhonny Peralta scored a leading run for the Tigers to give them a 2-1 lead. Tigers advanced their lead 3-1 during the seventh inning when Kelly struck a one-run homer (405
feet) towards right-field. Tigers remained on top till the end as eighth and ninth innings went score-less.
Speaking to reporters, Phil Coke said, “It's been pretty much magical this whole second half. We've gone out every day and handled our business. We're all hungry. We're all ready for this.”
Tigers’ manager, Jim Leyland said, “This is special to me because a lot of people didn't think I'd be managing the Tigers next year. We were fortunate, because we were the team this year that met the challenge. We were almost spotless.”
David DeJesus singled to centre-field at the bottom of seventh inning but Willingham lined out and Matsui flied out without giving any run to Athletics. Crisp doubled to right-field in the ninth inning but Weeks struck-out, Matsui popped out to third base
and Willingham ground out in search of runs.
As a result, Tigers levelled the four-game series 1-1 against Athletics after this convincing defeat.
