Doug Fister’s pitching helps Seattle Mariners defeat Baltimore Orioles, 4-3 – MLB Update
Seattle Mariners’ starter, Doug Fister was remarkable as he threw seven solid innings with an ERA of 3.24 and had nine strike-outs in the Mariners’ 4-3 victory against the Baltimore Orioles at Safeco Field, Seattle on May 30.
Fister gave away three runs on seven hits with three earned runs. He allowed only one walk on 110 pitches. Fister commented on his feelings and said, “Guys have been gaining confidence. It's a great thing to be a part of. It's a real family atmosphere here.”
The Mariners got off the mark by posting two runs in the first inning and took a 2-0 lead. Brendan Ryan was ground out to second base and Ichiro Suzuki scored the first run. The second run was taken by Justin Smoak on the triple-run shot of Jack Cust to
deep centre-field. During the second inning, no score was contributed from any batter.
In the third inning, the Orioles scored their initial run when Mark Reynolds homered (425 feet) towards left-field. On the other side, Adam Kennedy walked and Suzuki scored his second run of the game. Ryan posted a single run at the bottom of the third when
Miguel Olivo walked and Smoak moved to third base. The score-card was 4-1 after the third inning.
The pitchers were on top from the fourth to seventh inning and did not allow any runs. The Mariners’ Manager Eric Wedge was amused with the way Fister pitched right through the game. Speaking to reporters, Wedge said, “You look at his stuff, the way he approaches
his game plan and sticks to it, the way he's able to make adjustments and make pitches. He's not just a one or two-pitch guy. He has weapons beyond that.”
The Orioles were able to add two runs in the eighth inning to cut their shortfall 4-3. Nick Markakis singled to right-field and Robert Andino posted a single run. Felix Pie scored the last run of the game when Vladimir Guerrero hit a grounder to left-field.
Pie stole a run on the error of the Mariners’ third baseman Chone Figgins.
Jake Arrieta was expensive as he pitched two innings with an ERA of 4.97 and gave away four runs on four hits.
