Doug Melvin ‘shocked’ and ‘surprised’ when he first heard the news of Ryan Braun – MLB News
As the uncertainty surrounding Ryan Braun’s failed test result kept making the rounds, the Milwaukee Brewers’ general manager Doug Melvin revealed on Wednesday, December 14, that he discovered the news from a journalist, which shocked and surprised him.
Facing a 50-game suspension provided the left-fielder’s appeal does not find solid ground to be accepted. Although the player is aggressively pursuing the case, confident about the outcome owing to his conviction that he has no culpability whatsoever. It
will depend entirely on what the three-person jury decides once the hearing begins.
However, surprising bit of news lay in the fact that most of the team members, including – surprisingly, even the management as to what was in the offing. Like Melvin said, it was through an ESPN journalist that he discovered the news.
"I first knew about it when it was breaking news the other day," Melvin said of the report, which came out Saturday. "[ESPN's Tim Kurkjian] said something to me in Dallas [at the Winter Meetings] and said there were guys who may run with the story, and that's
the first time I ever heard of it. I was shocked and surprised."
For now, the report has it that it was a performance-enhancing drug that the player was using. On the other hand, another strongly influential sport outlet maintains that through sources, they have the report that it was not a performing-enhancing drug that
led to the violation.
What is clear, however, is the fact that Braun has decided to appeal the results. Having already made his mind about that and as the hearing to be held next month, Braun has made it clear he has nothing to hide.
Nonetheless, it is the jury which will make the final decision, that too after extensive hearing. That indeed is what the Milwaukee Brewers have in the mind and will accordingly make their subsequent plans to avoid any unexpected situation.
Whatever the end result may be, what is important for both Ryan Braun and the Milwaukee Brewers is the player’s presence once the next seasons kicks off. If he fails to get a favourable hearing, next season will be a nightmare for the player.
