Dougall Trying to Get a Contract at Rotherham
Former Ulster player, Sean Dougall, is trying to win a contract with Championship side, Rotherham, ahead of the new domestic season.
Dougall has spent the close season without a club and he has joined Rotherham on trial during their pre-season campaign. This means he will be able to play in friendlies and take part in training.
The fact that the player does not already have a contract with the club means that he has no other incentive but to try and work hard because he doesn't have the security that contract would provide.
There are a number of attributes that Dougall possesses that would make him a very good signing for the team. However, some have already said that the fact the player is on trial is a sign that the club may not be at all interested in the player.
Attributes
Dougall is hungry and ambitious. He does not have a club and it means that he will have to prove he has these qualities in order to get a contract with Rotherham. If he does so then all he has to do is keep showing these qualities and he will soon be in the first team on a regular basis.
He plays in the flanker position and would give Rotherham extra width. This will be very important when they play against better teams next season because you have to be able to move the ball wide very quickly. Dougall does not look overweight or unfit and he should be able to burst through any opposition defence.
He seems a very popular and likeable person. It is not easy for someone to go on trial with a club because they will always be aware that other players won't like the fact that they're using club facilities and funds.
Dougall said: "Playing Championship rugby at a club of this stature would mean everything to me and I want to be part of the team that runs out at the start of the season - We're being pushed to the limit in training but there is a clear method behind why we are doing so many scrums and pushing so hard. No one is in a comfort zone and we're all trying to catch the eye and win a place."
On Trial
Dougall is not going to have turned up at the club without someone there knowing who he was and what he wanted. The point is that coaches at Rotherham would have done a little bit of research on him and if he was a sure thing then they would have handed him a contract at the very moment he came knocking at the club.
A trial suggests that a club has doubts over a player and it is up to the player to prove that these doubts are wrong. However, Dougall may only be able to prove a low number of things during the limited time that he has on the trial. This means that even if he signs for the club then there will be people who still have some form of doubt over him.
Betting Advice
Dougall signing for Rotherham would mean extra quality in the wide areas of the pitch. They would have a very hungry and determined player in their squad who can only increase competition for places. Ignore any negative reactions and news because the possibilities of the player joining Rotherham can eradicate these.
Your best option is to wait and see where Dougall starts the season. If he is at Rotherham then he can hit the ground running and could be a very good bet to score the most points and tries for the club over the course of the season.
