Douglas Scott to take year off from University to prepare for 2012 London Olympics – Swimming news
British swimmer, Douglas Scott, has announced that he will take a year-long break from his University and will try to improve his timings, as he seeks qualification for the 2012 London Olympics.
The 19-year-old Scott is a student of Mathematics and Economics degree at the University of Stirling and he is only a seconds away from the FINA A-Time Qualification Standard for the 100m breast-stroke. With his decision, Scott is left with only 12 months
to prepare and qualify for the upcoming Olympic Games.
Douglas’s decision is fueled by his sister Corrie’s participation at major world events. Corrie competed at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and Scott seems to be following in her footsteps.
The London Olympics will begin on July 27, 2012 and Scott said that he wants to utilise his maximum time for the mega event. Scott told media outlets about his decision, saying, “I’m trying to take a year out to concentrate on my swimming, but it’s proving
difficult at the moment because I might have to give up some of my funding to do so. If I can get the time out it would make a huge difference. It would allow me to focus on things in the pool and eating better.”
Scott also stated that he is aiming to rank among the top two breast-stroke swimmers of the Great Britain. He said that he will try to avail every opportunity that could help him qualify for the Olympics. “It would mean so much to me if I made it. It would
mean all the training I’ve done for all those years has mattered for something and been totally worthwhile,” Douglas said.
The 19-year-old said that he would feel great if he makes his way to the London. He also said that his ultimate goal is not qualifying for London only but he also wants to demonstrate a noteworthy performance in front of the swimming world. Douglas said
he is very hopeful that he will make his way to the starting blocks of London.
Scott was very thankful to his coach Ian Wright’s efforts so he could use all his time and efforts to qualify for the London Olympics. The breast-stroke swimmer said he has a busy year, as he will participate in the Celtic Tri-Nation in May, Mare Nostrum
and National Trials in June and the Scottish Swimming Championships in July.
He said that these competitions will also help him in his aim for the London Olympics and he will try to exceed the expectations of his families and friends by qualifying for London 2012.
