The Brazilian born Dutch footballer, who has made 115 appearances for Twente since 2007, made his professional debut for the Dutch outfit in December 2007. Earlier in his career, he was linked to multiple clubs from across Europe but the 24-year old penned
a contract extension in 2008, tying him up with Twente till 2012.
With the summer transfer activities in full swing these days, Douglas revealed that after spending a lengthy 5-year spell with the Eredivisie team, he plans on embarking on a new challenge, and has been approached by five different clubs so far.
While talking to reporters, he said: “Five clubs are interested and there's a bigger club than Newcastle. I cannot still say anything about it, but I hope soon to have my new club.”
Newcastle, who underwent a successful last term finishing fifth in the final league standings, have already made public their intention of bolstering their squad in summer, as they will compete in an extra front in the Europa League next season.
Douglas, widely considered as the best defender in the Dutch league, possesses all the traits of a good centre back. His strong physique and towering height gives him the natural advantage of winning most of the balls in the air.
With the Brazilian born Dutchman having conceded that a club bigger in stature than Newcastle are reported to be keeping close tabs on him, rumours and surmises have surfaced claiming that club to be either Tottenham Hotspur or http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786.
Nevertheless, the defender mentioned he had achieved the milestones that he had set himself at the time of joining Twente and expressed his longing to be a part of a new challenge.
He added, “I have spent five years [at Twente] and have done my best for the club. I have won the title, the cup - it's time for a next step.”
He also admitted his performance of late in the Dutch league has been below par as he tends to go down rather easily at times, and vowed to make amends for the future.
With the rumour mill in the overdrive regarding the player’s possible destiny in the coming season, Douglas expunged Ajax from the probable list claiming that he was approached by the Dutch giants but he turned down their offer.
He added, “I have personally been in touch with Ajax and immediately said that I'm not interested.”
